The &#8216;ottoy Initiative aims to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture and to repair and improve UC Berkeley\u2019s relationship with the Ohlone community. Campus collaborations include academic research across departments; student engagement through student housing and dining programs; and facilities and landscape development\u2014 and more collaborations are in the works. Public events take place across the UC Berkeley campus, and are sometimes hosted in &#8216;o\u1e6d\u1e6doytak\u2013The Place of Repair\u2013 on the patio adjacent to the Hearst Museum of Anthropology. Educational experiences are tailored to participants\u2019 interests and may be enhanced with Ohlone tea and brownies using traditional recipes provided by Cafe Ohlone. Sessions are usually offered at &#8216;o\u1e6d\u1e6doytak\u2014The Place of Repair\u2014the name of the patio adjacent to the Hearst Museum of Anthropology&nbsp;or at the Lawrence Hall of Science. The exhibits center the Ohlone cultural experience and perspective of the East Bay landscape. Visitors to the outdoor exhibit are greeted by a land acknowledgment in Chochenyo\u2014the first language spoken in the East Bay. Additional signage shares the Chochenyo words and traditional uses for various native plants in our pollinator garden.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group just-text\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-offset-left\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading header-offset\">\u2018ottoy Initiative and \u2018ammatka Values<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-offset-right\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8216;o\u1e6d\u1e6doy (repair).<\/strong> Everything we do is oriented toward mending: the land, the culture, the relationships between Ohlone people and our home. We do not accept the conditions imposed on us; we act from a place of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ohlone leadership.<\/strong> Our work is led by Ohlone people, guided by our elders, and accountable to our community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Place-specificity.<\/strong> Our knowledge, our food, our land management practices, and our culture are hyper-local \u2014 rooted in the specific microclimates, plants, and histories of the San Francisco Bay Area. This specificity is a source of strength, not limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beauty and dignity.<\/strong> We represent our culture with care and intention.
